Routine
Quick answer: the evidence-backed summer minimum is four steps — gentle cleanse, targeted serum, light moisturiser, broad-spectrum SPF — in the morning, and cleanse + treat + moisturise at night. Everything beyond that is optional; most 10-step routines just multiply the chances of irritation in the heat.
Why less works better in summer
Heat increases oil production and product breakdown; sweat moves layered products around; and stacking actives raises irritation risk exactly when UV exposure peaks. Clinical reviews of skincare routines consistently support consistency over complexity — a simple routine done daily beats an elaborate one done sporadically.
The morning routine (3–4 minutes)
- Cleanse — a gentle gel; overnight oil rinses off without a deep clean. See Cetaphil and Avène for reliably gentle options.
- Serum (optional but valuable) — an antioxidant like vitamin C under SPF is summer's best-supported pairing.
- Light moisturiser — gel-cream in heat; even oily skin should not skip this (dehydrated oily skin overproduces oil).
- SPF 30–50 — the non-negotiable step; browse the SPF collection.
The evening routine
- Cleanse properly — 60 seconds to remove the day's SPF and sweat (this is the step summer skin most often misses).
- Treat — your one targeted active: retinol for ageing (night-only), salicylic acid for blemishes, or a brightening serum for tone.
- Moisturise — seal it in.
