Exfoliation
Quick answer: summer dullness is usually build-up — layers of SPF, sweat and oil that a quick cleanse doesn't fully remove — plus a thickened surface layer of dead cells. The fix is a proper evening cleanse every day and gentle chemical exfoliation two to three times a week, not daily scrubbing.
Why skin looks dull by August
Daily (correct!) SPF use, sweat, urban pollution and holiday chlorine all accumulate on the skin surface. Meanwhile UV exposure thickens the outermost dead-cell layer as a defence. The result: rough texture that scatters light instead of reflecting it — the technical definition of "dull".
Step one: actually remove the SPF
Before adding exfoliants, fix the cleanse. A single fast wash rarely removes a full day of sunscreen. In summer, either double cleanse in the evening or spend a full 60 seconds with a quality gel or cream cleanser. Half of "dull skin" resolves right here.
Chemical vs physical exfoliation
- AHAs (glycolic, lactic) dissolve the bonds holding dead cells — best for dullness and texture. Find them in the AHA & BHA collection.
- BHA (salicylic) is oil-soluble, so it clears congested pores too — the summer pick for oily or blemish-prone skin.
- Physical scrubs aren't evil, but harsh gritty formulas cause micro-damage; polished-particle formulas (like ZO's Exfoliating Polish) used gently 1–2× weekly are the safer version.
Safe summer frequency
- Normal/combination skin: chemical exfoliant 2–3 evenings a week
- Sensitive skin: once weekly, gentle AHA (lactic) — see the sensitive skin collection
- Never the same night as retinol, never the day after sunburn, and always with SPF the following mornings
The warning signs you've overdone it
Stinging, tight-yet-shiny skin, or blotchy redness mean stop and switch to the barrier repair collection for a fortnight. Exfoliation reveals glow; over-exfoliation removes the wall that keeps skin healthy.
